Summary: If you operate in multiple markets, you can no longer rely on single-country SEO snapshots. Google’s AI Overviews / AI Mode roll out unevenly and count their traffic inside Search Console → Performance → Web, Perplexity’s Deep Research reads and synthesizes hundreds of sources before citing, and ChatGPT Atlas turns browsing into an agentic task environment with links and “Sources.” Your monitoring must therefore (1) separate presence of AI modules by country, (2) record which domains are cited (including yours), and (3) join those observations to first-party web analytics and GSC Web data filtered by country. The workflow below gives you an auditable, cross-country method to do that in 30–60 minutes per market each week.


Why multi-country monitoring is non-negotiable in 2025

  • Availability and behavior vary by country. Google publicly stated AI Overviews would roll out market-by-market after the U.S. launch (May 2024), which means visibility patterns can diverge by locale.
  • Google includes AI Mode/AIO traffic inside the “Web” report, so you won’t see a separate AIO tab; you must annotate and correlate by country to infer impact.
  • Relevance and ranking depend on local context. Google’s own documentation says results consider location and language; the same query can show different results in Paris vs. Hong Kong.
  • Perplexity cites sources by default and, in Deep Research, runs dozens of searches and reads hundreds of sources—creating a moving target of cited domains that can differ across locales.
  • ChatGPT Atlas adds a browser-based “agent mode” and a Sources UI (in Search) that can elevate or demote which sites are surfaced during a task. You need to know whether you show up in those cited links.

What “good” looks like: Three metrics you track per country

  1. Presence — Does an AI module appear?

    • Google: Does AI Overview / AI Mode render on the query in that country/device?
    • Perplexity: Are standard or Deep Research answers generated?
    • ChatGPT Atlas (Search pane): Are Sources shown?
      Why it matters: Different markets will show modules at different rates; presence is the leading indicator.
  2. Citations — Which domains/URLs are linked from the AI module?

    • Record the order and frequency of domains across repeated checks.
      Why it matters: AI systems favor safe, citable pages; if competitors are cited, study what they state (thresholds, tables, primary sources).
  3. Impact — Country-level clicks/CTR to the candidate pages.

    • Use Search Console → Performance (Web) with Country as the dimension or filter; export Clicks/Impressions/CTR/Avg Position.

Tooling and data you already have

  • Search Console (Web): Apply the country dimension or filter; compare countries or devices, then export weekly. (API gives the same dimensions for automation.)
  • Country-specific vantage points: Because results vary by location, language, and device, perform checks from IPs located in-country (or use teammates/partners there).
  • Perplexity Deep Research: Run the same prompt per country (e.g., “best [product] for [use case] in [country/region]”) and log citations.
  • ChatGPT Atlas (Search): Use Atlas in each market and record Sources for the same prompts (Atlas exposes a “Sources” button in Search results).

A repeatable 6-step workflow (per market, weekly)

Step 1 — Pick canonical queries per market
Shortlist 25–40 high-value, question-shaped queries per country (mix of informational/comparison/troubleshooting). Prioritize those with impressions but low CTR in that country’s GSC slice.

Step 2 — Check module presence (country/device matrix)
From an in-country vantage point:

  • Google: Search and mark AIO present? (Y/N) for each query on mobile + desktop.
  • Perplexity: Run standard and Deep Research once each; mark answer present?
  • Atlas: Ask the same query in the Search panel; note if Sources appear.
    Repeat 3× per week to smooth volatility.

Step 3 — Record citations (the link set)
For each appearance, list the linked domains/URLs in order. Screenshots are helpful, but a structured log is better (Query → Date/Time → Country → Device → Module → [Domain 1, Domain 2…]).

Step 4 — Join to performance (first-party)
In GSC Web, filter by country, export page-level metrics for the URLs you’re trying to get cited (and the ones that are cited). Track changes in Clicks/CTR week over week. Note: AI Mode / AIO clicks and impressions are included in Web totals, not broken out into a separate report.

Step 5 — Investigate what wins citations
Study competitors that repeatedly show up in citations in a given country. Look for answer-first structure, if/then thresholds, tables, version-specific instructions, and primary references—elements AI systems can safely quote and justify.

Step 6 — Localize with intent, not just language
Use hreflang for language/country variants and ensure each locale page interlinks all alternates (including itself) and supplies x-default as appropriate—common implementation errors cause mis-targeting. Combine this with local references (regulatory thresholds, brand availability) to become the safe citation in that market.


Designing your monitoring sheet

Create a table with these columns (copy this model per country):

Research pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

  • Comparing across locations with one IP. Google confirms results consider location/language/device; use in-country vantage points.
  • Assuming AIO is “on” or “off” globally. Rollouts and triggers vary; confirm presence per query and locale.
  • Expecting an AIO traffic bucket in GSC. There isn’t a separate filter; traffic is included in Web totals. Rely on annotations and correlation.
  • Implementing hreflang partially. Each variant must reference all others (and itself) or links can be ignored/misinterpreted.

How to act on what you find (country-specific playbook)

  1. Publish answer-first local pages. If competitors are cited for “how to comply with [local rule] when choosing [product],” ship a version that leads with a verdict, local thresholds, and edge cases, then cite the primary local source. (Perplexity and AIO prize verifiable content.)
  2. Strengthen entity clarity for brand reliability. Add Organization structured data (name, logo, identifiers) on each locale site to disambiguate the brand and help Google’s visual elements and knowledge panel usage.
  3. Use hreflang + localized site names. Indicate preferred site names and ensure locale alternates are clean to reduce brand ambiguity in results.
  4. Improve UX and performance for cited pages first. Good page experience remains recommended; improve responsiveness and clarity on your target pages as you iterate internationally. (While not locale-specific, it boosts usefulness for users who click from AI modules.)

Governance & privacy—what to watch as you scale

  • Atlas privacy controls & Sources UI. Atlas exposes data controls and Sources for web answers; as more users research inside Atlas, being link-worthy in that environment matters.
  • Publisher policies for AI training. If you operate news hubs in some countries, decide whether to allow GPTBot or other AI crawlers; many publishers handle this via robots.txt or CDN rules. (Blocking training does not block appearance in AIO; that is governed by Google’s systems.)

Putting it all together (30-minute weekly loop per market)

  1. Run your query list (desktop + mobile) → record AIO presence + links.
  2. Run Perplexity (Std + Deep Research) → log citations.
  3. In Atlas Search, check Sources for the same prompts.
  4. Export GSC Web for that country → paste Clicks/CTR for tracked pages.
  5. Update briefs: add local thresholds, tables, primary references you’re missing.
  6. Ship and re-check next week; annotate releases so Web metrics line up with monitoring dates.
